Miriam

If you've  gone through the pages on this website called "Roll Call" and clicked on our senior portraits that appeared in The Demitasse, you may have found out by clicking on Mary Ann Byars' photo that for almost a decade she and husband Don have been spending time each year doing what they can to bring health and comfort to rural mountain villagers of Honduras . . . . in the name of Jesus Christ.

This story puts a face on the work they are doing.  Mary Ann and Don are about to make their 10th journey with their annual medical-dental mission team.  The packages have already been delivered and are awaiting their arrival--which is why they can accomplish so much in such the short time they have on site.

No doubt, Miriam will be waiting for Mary Ann, too.

This is the note that Linda Smith wrote me after sitting with Mary Ann at the July SHS Sweethearts gathering:

SHS Sweetheart of 1956 on a Mission

SHS classmate  Mary Ann Byars Lenz on Saturday, July 21, 2007, flies to the Honduras on her annual for-several- years journey to lend her help (along with many other volunteers) in the plight of the people of the Honduras.  Mary Ann's particular focus centers at the Good Shepherd's Children's Home located in a Honduras village.

In August of 1998, Mary Ann became poignantly attracted to Miriam Macota, an orphan girl in the Home.  Miriam was 4 years of age, weighed 12 pounds ...... malnutrition and neglect were obvious  (see photo # 1).  The second photo pictures   Mary Ann and child Miriam in 1999 at the age of 5, recuperating and growing with much TLC from many stateside volunteers.   The third photo shows Miriam in 2004 at 10 years of age.   THIS  is   Amazing Grace!!

As 10 other Sweethearts and I sat at our once-monthly luncheon this Thursday, July 19, 2007,  I took notes of Mary Ann's testimony to the power of love for our fellow man/child.  My desire for you classmates who read this and examine the photos is...to remember...All Creatures Great and Small are precious in His sight.

                                 Thank you

Look at Miriam maturing:
Here are latest photos of Miriam at age 13.   Don Lenz (Mary Ann's husband) and two other children are in one of the photos.    Miriam is becoming a beautiful young lady.....our ,  yes our,  Honduras Connection.

Mary Ann:  E-mail me your descriptions of these photos and your reflections on the impact your work with these people has had on you.  What do you see Miriam doing in 10, 20 or 30 years?
