Back
in 1956, when the student body was 525 students, SHS staff totaled 29,
and that included Mr. Brewster's two secretaries and 3 dietary
staff. We had 21who taught us subjects, and that includes Mr.
Collins who is listed only as the basketball coach.
Today's high school staff numbers 59, serving 385 students in grades 9-12. Those listed as teaching subjects number 26. By subtraction, the support staff and administration outnumber the teachers. To be fair, the 5 custodians are rightly listed on the SHS website as members of the staff, and our 1956 Demitasse does not have photos of custodians, but, at 54, the support staff still outnumbers the teachers. And that's not a bad thing in this day and time in which the use of teacher-extenders and supporters alleviate the faculty of many clerical and administrative burdens. Of the 26 faculty who have identifiable subjects to teach, there are twelve with information on degrees attained. Nine have reached the master's level, and two (the band leader and the Latin teacher) are working on their Ph.D. degree.
