The Things We Did Back Then

Bulldog Cheers

Life as a high school student back in the 50's was full of ups and downs.  Most retrospectives today treat the 50's as "Happy Days," the halcyon days of our youth.  Most of my memories are positive, happy memories of friendships, doing well in classes, striving and doing O.K in band, cheering winning teams--mostly doing things together with other students.  Extracurricular activities, likewise, involved others--sandlot baseball in the summers, swimming at the municipal pool across the street from the high school and even working at an after school job (mine was ushering at the Colbert Theater).

We tend to suppress memories of the things that did not uplift us when we were kids.  Back then, we practiced what we would do in case of an atomic bomb attack, we sweated out the summers in fear of polio, and many of us were unlucky in love.  One of my greatest regrets is not learning to dance back then.  That was one of the biggest group fun activities of the Fifties--bop and rock and roll are iconic of that era.  It even took on "team" proportions in such dances as "the bunny hop."  But, not for me.  I never did attend a sock hop nor enjoy a prom because I had 2 left feet, which is ironic because I am a big ballroom dance fan now--a regular Richard Gere (but not that talented).

On this page, we present reminders of what we did back then.  Other pages will tell you who we were, what we have become, things about our teachers, things about our high school.  Here we celebrate the activities.

Send me an e-mail with a description of your favorites, and I will add it to the list of memory-shakers listed on the left (if it's not X-rated).  Send photos, too!  This is essential to a great nostalgic look back.  Either make digital files and send them by e-mail or send them by US Postal Service (L. E. Buettner, M.D., 2806 Lake Cove Circle, Tuscaloosa, AL  35406).  If you send them protect them with stiff cardboard in the mailer.  I will scan them and send them back promptly.
