Do you remember your first Western Union telegram?
In Bette Anderson Picken's most recent packet of goodies to share with us, I found her original Western Union telegram from the mayor of Sheffield, C. L. Beard, congratulating her on her successful high school experience. Now, that surprised me, because I did not remember receiving one. Upon reading the text of the telegram, though, the memory of this, my first telegram, became more vivid. I now recall being skeptical that it was a bonafide telegram because it had periods instead of the word, "STOP" like they portrayed telegrams in the movies. I'm sure we all got one personally addressed and reflecting the sentiments of Mayor Beard. What a nice gesture by our mayor, to take the time to recognize each of us on the occasion of one of our most important milestone achievements.
