Mr. Adair

Mr. Bill Adair succeeded long-time band director Frank Shires in 1954 and quickly established himself as a master teacher, devoted to bringing out the best in each of the band and glee club members.  He had a coaxing method rather than a stormy, bombastic temperment.  He encouraged and patiently taught us.

Mr. Bill Adair, our band director, was one of my two favorite teachers.  He gave me the opportunity to be in the band and his patience and leadership deepened my love for music.

As most of you know, my world revolved around the band, and as a result, I got to be good friends with Bill Adair.  Some days he would get me out of study hall, and we would talk or practice music together.  He was very interested in doing a good job as band director and in getting and maintaining good relationships with the students.  I kept in touch with him for a while, when I was at Auburn and for a time afterward.  As so often happens when you are separated by miles and miles, communications break down and you lose contact.  That is what happened.  I will always remember Bill as a sincere man who cared.
