Marcel
Black, Alabama State Representative from the 3rd District (Colbert
County), practices law in Tuscumbia and was having lunch with men friends
at the Southland. He 'saw' one of the SHS Sweetheart's
T-shirts, and I think he knew a couple of the girls..........anyway, he
came to our table and we visited briefly. I asked him if I
could take his photo and he said....sure. You can see the
results!
Yep, when I get them all ready I say...think Louis...and they each grin BIG... He said that he didn't know "Louis," but he grinned BIG anyway. I told him you were a fellow classmate and a physician living in Tuscaloosa and that you were our SHS Class of 1956 webmaster. He then said that he knew the name "Buettner." He is younger than we, I believe. Ed. Note: He couldn't have been in one of my brothers' class even if he were from Sheffield because he's only 51 years old. I would bet he knows my younger brother, Robert (or as he calls himself now, "Bob"), who is also a lawyer and was General Counsel for Alabama Power Company before he retired a couple years ago. The girls are ALL excited abut the upcoming mini-reunion. I heard the comment from the other end of the table, "Surely, I can live that much longer!" Everyone laughed.

In this photo of Mary Ann Byers Lenz and Barbara Laughlin South, Mary Ann is receiving clothing gifts for Honduras children (under the age of 2) from Barbara. |
||||
| Mary Ann Byers Lenz spoke of her Honduras mission work and loaned me some photos to illustrate what she does there. She collects clothing and pharmaceuticals during a calendar year and then ships them (her expense) boxed to be there for her to distribute when she makes the trip. She showed me actual figures of an inventory list shipped recently....747 items, 23 cartons of baby clothes which she dispenses in her work at the village pharmacy. Barbara South invited the Sweetheart's group to participate monthly, 'gifting' similar children's clothing, etc. The Sweethearts unanimously decided to make that a special project. | |||||

Noooooo! This is not a group picture of the SHS Sweethearts at their August get-together. This is Carolyn Durham, the lady who takes care of our Sweethearts. From what I understand in Linda's note, she has been their waitress since they began the meetings in September of 2006. Can you guess why she's wearing an Elvis tee shirt?

13 of our Sweetheart's group rallied together...as you will see in Photo # 4 ...for which I shall supply names...then sweet Patsy Bell Congleton joined us late...so she made 14 in attendance. I believe that is the largest gathering we have enjoyed to date. We had 3 new attendees today, Rebecca Malone Floyd, Peggy Forsythe Hammack and, returning to us after an absence, Glenda Craft Lindsey. The lady wearing the ELVIS T-shirt is our usual Southland Restaurant server for these many months, name of Carolyn Durham. I gave her the SHS web-site business card, also gave one each to Phyllis and Tommy McCay (owners). Server Carolyn asked for one as I had been distributing the cards to girls who failed to get one earlier. She said she hoped you would put her photo on the SHS site wearing her Elvis shirt cause then she could SEE herself on her computer. We (the SHS) web-site is getting around. Today, August 16 was the anniversary of Elvis' death which occurred August 16, 1977. He was 42 at that time. Very interesting...so many of the ladies recalled aloud details of where they were, what they were involved in, when they learned of his death. Seems one recounting led to another.
We girls talked much of
Elvis and his impact on our younger Sheffield days...... neat
remembrances from several girls. Think I need to begin wearing a
wire recorder and get in hot water I don't need.
(HOOTS !! ) We are having TOO MUCH FUN to jeopardize this
group of Destiny's Children.
A NEAT learning
experience for me, as I cannot honestly recall which planet I was on
at that time since I was newly relocated to California and THAT
acclimation was indeed a TRIP for country girl
Linda.
Mary Ann Byars Lenz had many photos of her recent Honduras journey and tales to warm the heart and stir one's soul. She did loan me 3 updated photos of 'our' adoptee Miriam (now 13) which I shall scan and send to you and perhaps you would like to update Mary Ann's Honduras link on the web-site. Much pleasant conversation about this past Saturday's mini-reunion. IT was a success !
I was asked to make 4 more
Sweetheart's T-shirts...I think we all intend 'going down' together...at
least we will just keep meeting and making new memories.
Next meeting luncheon: Thursday, September 20, 2007.

I believe the cooler weather
and the advent of Fall contribute to the Sweetheart's jovial luncheon
today; chock full of so many conversations and laughing...we began
raising our hands to get words in 'edgewise'.
Those present today:
Betty Ladner Douthitt, Joanne McMoran Jeffreys, Patsy Bell Congleton,
Joyce Horton Johnson, Glenda Craft Lindsey, Barbara Laughlin South, Mary
Ann Byars Lenz, Sandra Foreman Morris, Nancy Stewart King, Joanne Marsh
Gargis, Louis Yarbrough Holland and....Linda.
I had to 'show off' Sandra Foreman Morris' Bulldogs T-shirt that she won at the class mini-reunion in August...and the new Sweetheart's T-shirts given out today. Jim Congleton (Patsy Bell Congleton's husband) arrived to chauffeur Patsy home so I include a photo of the two. He's a Sweetie ! That look on Patsy's face looking at Jim...tells their love story...no words necessary.
When classmates become as
sisters, our gifts continue to multiply.
Next luncheon is Thursday,
October 18, 2007.
