SHS Mascot: The Bulldog |
||||
|
The mighty Bulldog, fierce and drooling for tiger meat, yellow jackets and other assorted school mascots, is the symbol of Sheffield High School athletics. This page is devoted to him. With your help, we hope to develop our understanding of when and how he came to represent SHS. If you have any information about the origins of the bulldog as SHS mascot or know of other mascots that have represented SHS over the years, let us know. See Bud Thrasher's findings below. Thanks, Bud!

If you, like I, have the pleasure of entertaining grandkids from time to time, here's a great trick that they will enjoy and give you an introduction to tell them about your high school days. |

The Bulldog graphics are all over the high school, from the Principal's Office to wearing apparel. The murals were painted by the sister of Gina Mashburn, Director of the mentoring program at SHS. Aren't they great?
The hand shadow of "Old Growler" is from an 1858 publication authored by Henry Bursill who must have had grandchildren of his own to amuse. Click here to see all the creatures in his collection.

Here's the scoop on the Bulldog mascot from Bud Thrasher: I did some research on the Bulldog. I contacted Mr. George Carter and told him about our WebSite. He played for SHS in '36, '37, and '38. He said in '38 the school board hired Mr. C.M. Brewster as the new high school coach. The team at that time was called the PURPLE DEVILS. They honored Coach Brewster by naming the team the BULLDOGS after the college he attended which was Howard College BULLDOGS which is now the SAMFORD BULLDOGS which is located in Birmingham, Al. Mr. Boley was the Ass't Superintendent under Mr. Brewster until he took over as Superintendent. Mr. George Carter is a loyal supporter of the BULLDOGS and still attends the games when he is able. You would know when he is in attendance by hearing him holler "GO YOU DOGS". Hope this solves the mystery about the BULLDOG BUD (8/26/05)
