Alright,
Guys! June Holmes Holland just sent me this photo of an early class
reunion. She thinks it's the first one that our class
observed. Peggy Wynne Taylor has corresponded with me about her
scrapbook that has EVERYTHING in it (talk about a treasure trove!), and
she mentioned that there was a reunion in 1974 at a restaurant on the
river bluff, on the right before crossing the bridge--and another reunion
in 1980 where the group attended the Homecoming Game together.
I'm betting this
photo is the group that went to Homecoming because Peggy says she has a
photo (probably this one) of that group and because the girls all have
corsages with the pipe cleaner "S."
DON'T YOU ALL LOOK SO YOUNG!
If you remember
this gathering, send me a brief (or longer) write-up.

The
reunion was an annual thing that SHS did for their 25th anniversary
graduates on homecoming week each year. Ours was in the fall of
1980, I believe. My family and I got to Sheffield in time to see
the homecoming parade that Friday afternoon. As it passed by,
several people asked me to hop on, but I didn't.
We were guests of SHS
at the football game that Friday night, and we sat in a group.
Either before or after the game, we gathered in the cafeteria and
visited with each other. According to my pictures, we had about 44
graduates at the gathering.
In looking over
the pictures, I was surprised to find several of those who are no longer
with us. I count six of them. Also, there are four faculty
members I see; Mr. Boley, Mrs. Murray, Mrs. Berryman, and
Coach Wright.
I recall trying to get
around to see as many people as I could. We had had one other
reunion after 17 years (the one at the restaurant by the Florence
bridge).
There was one funny
thing that happened at the ball game that my sister and I have enjoyed
over the years. Patsy Bell Congleton was sitting in front of me,
and at the end of the third quarter, my sister and my son came up and
said they were leaving the game to go get a hamburger (my son was almost
thirteen at the time).
Patsy looked around
and saw Paula and smiled. After Paula and Scott left, Patsy turned
to me and asked, "Was that your daughter?" I
answered, "No, that's my sister." Patsy got all
flustered, realizing she had drawn the wrong conclusion. We all
had a good laugh. At home, later, my wife told Paula what Patsy
had said. Paula is almost nine years younger than me, and she did
look young for her age
Paula has never let me
forget Patsy's question.
Attached to this note
are several pictures of this reunion. There are two pictures of
the group, one without June Holmes Holland and one with. June was
late getting there, and we gave her a hard time for being late.
