Buck Locke: Gwen Ware lived next door to me for all of the time we were in high school. Gwen was an artist and loved to paint. She invited my parents and me over to the Oaks of the Cypress which was a lovely antebellum home in Florence for an art exhibit on the grounds. It was a lovely day and Gwen gave me a guided tour of the paintings and explained what the artists were trying to portray. This was very helpful as I was and still am pretty ignorant of the finer points of art. As I recall we also had a picnic lunch that her mom and mine provided. We enjoyed the day so much that we stayed on the lawn although the home was open to the public. I was saddened to learn that the home burned, sometime in the 60s perhaps. My mother said that it was a lesson that we should always see things when the opportunity was there as “You never know when it will be gone!”. |
