CLASSMATE TRIBUTES

LOUIS BUETTNER:

Bill transferred to SHS sometime in the middle of our high school years, but he made an immediate impact on us and on the faculty at Sheffield High.  He was elected to attend Boy's State, and it was during that week or so during the summer of 1955 on the campus of the University of Alabama that I had long discussions with him about his potential.  Bill was actually quite shy, and I thought he was somewhat tentative about getting involved in our high school activities before that summer.  I encouraged him to pick an activity or some area of service, become enthusiastically involved and be assured that everybody would respond warmly.  Bill was a big, handsome kid who really blossomed during our senior year.  He was a big support to me in the Student Council during the year I was president, was elected senior class president, and was chosen as an escort for all the functions that involved the best-looking girls in our class.  I don't know about what Bill did between 1956 and 1991, but I'll bet it was "superior," too.  I am proud to call him my high school friend.
