CLASSMATE TRIBUTES

Buck Locke

Billie Hurst was a distant cousin.  She was also one of the first in our class to get married before finishing school.  There was brouhaha about allowing her to remain in school.  We discussed it and couldn’t understand why everyone would not want her to finish.  I guess the administration’s assumption was that she would encourage others of us to get married.

I had a long talk with her at our 45th reunion.  She was in a long struggle with cancer, but died shortly after that reunion in a household accident.  She was married for over 46 years to the same fellow and she was in love with him the last time we spoke.

I guess the moral of this was “it is always good to question your assumptions”.  Billie got married young and for her it lasted for a lifetime.
