The SHS Website At Your Fingertip

Up to now, we've been asking (more like begging and pleading) you to type "w-w-w-.-s-h-s-c-l-a-s-s-o-f-1-9-5-6-.-o-r-g" into the URL field (where the heck is "the URL field?") to visit our class website.  Now this is almost too much to ask anyone to remember or do.  I'll bet that those of you who rely on memory for the address of the website have, on more than one occasion, typed in ". . . classof1956.com and got an error message.  IT'S .ORG!  Thanks to Louis' pretentiousness, he registered our website as an "organization" instead of a "commercial" site and made it hard for us to get the URL right.

Some of you have simplified this access process a bit by making the SHS website a "Favorite Place."  But, you still have to remember that you want to go to the website to exercise this option to check out what's new there.  And, to boot, it takes at least 3 keystrokes.

How about having an icon on your desktop that will take only one double-click to transport you to the homepage of the website?  It can sit prominently on your desktop (the first screen that comes up when you turn on your computer), and that little image of our beloved Alma Mater will remind you that you really DO want to check out the website for new stuff.

Well, here's how you do it!

Step 1 -  MAKE YOUR SHORTCUT LINK TO THE WEBSITE

1.  Print this page so you can follow the instructions.

2.  Close or minimize this window so you can see your desktop (the main screen that you see when your computer starts up).  If you are in full-screen mode ( the middle icon in the cluster of three at the upper right of your screen looks like this:  ), then you should click on it so this page won't take up the full screen.

You may have to drag this window down by left-clicking on the blue bar at the top of the screen, holding the button down and dragging it down a bit if you want to follow the instructions on the computer screen.

2.  Right click on the desktop, point the cursor to New on the drop down menu, and then click Shortcut

3.  A pop-up form window will appear with the instruction to Type the location of the item.  Type in the blank field:  www.shsclassof1956.org  (This is the URL of the SHS website), and then click Next.

4.  The next pop-up window will ask you for the name that will appear under the icon.  Type in SHS Website.  Then, click Finish.

5.  An unfamiliar icon with the name, SHS Website, will appear on the desktop.

You will now change the icon to the custom icon with the image of SHS.

Step 2 - Download the SHSIcon05.ico file to your computer

1.  Right click on the link below:

SHSIcon05.ico

It is important to RIGHT CLICK and not left click or double-click with the left mouse button!

2.  Click (That's "Left Click") on Save Target As....

3.  A pop-up window will appear with the default location for where you are going to save this icon file.  It will probably be My Documents, but you can put it anywhere you want.  I would recommend clicking on the file icon with the curved "Up Arrow" until you see Desktop in the window of the destination location--the window by Save in:

4.  Then, click on the Save button at the bottom of the window.  Your icon image will be waiting there for you to use in the next step.

CHANGE THE PICTURE OF THE SHORTCUT ICON TO A PICTURE OF SHS

1.  Right click on the new shortcut icon,    , and left click on Properties in the drop-down menu.

2.  The window that appears will have a button called, Change Icon.  Click on it

3.  A new window with some icon choices will appear, but at the top there is a field that says, Look for icons in this file:       Click on Browse that appears right beside this window.

4.  Use the same file icon with the "Up Arrow" that you used in Step 3 of downloading the icon.  Click on it repeatedly until you stop getting new screens in the pop-up window and Desktop will be in the blue bar at the top of the window.  You will see in the list of things on your desktop an image of the SHS icon.  Double click on it

5.  You will be returned to the Change Icon menu.  Click on Apply, and then Save.  The pop-up window will disappear and you should now have an icon on the desktop that is a tiny picture of SHS with the words, SHS Website underneath.  Clicking on this icon will take you directly to the homepage of the website.

6.  You can now drag the icon file that you downloaded (the one with the "X" instead of an arrow) into the Recycle Bin or save it elsewhere (like in My Documents) in case you might want to reuse it.
