Why
a Class Gift?
Have you personally thanked a teacher at SHS for his or her contributions to the course your life has taken? Next to our parent's contributions, those of our teachers, and our high school teachers in particular, were probably the most influential in getting us started on the path to successful careers. Some of us began this discussion at the 40th Reunion in 2001 when Buck Locke proposed that we do something substantial that would encourage academic excellence at our high school alma mater. Click here to see the background issues. Buck is involved in a number of philanthropies, including educational grants by his company, Hewlett-Packard. He has seen the good that academic support by financial stimulation can accomplish, and he suggests that we could work this magic at SHS, also. This would be a worthy tribute to our teachers: honoring those who have gone before by supporting those who continue their work today. While the the specific focus of the "Class Gift" and the details of the funding of projects have not been determined yet, we hope that the gift will make a difference in the lives of students who might not otherwise be destined to succeed. The "Gift" was intentionally not a part of recent reunion activities, despite some references to raising funds prior to the reunion you may find elsewhere on this website. The campaign, rather, will be an ongoing drive to raise funds for a "Class of '56 Trust" within the Sheffield Education Foundation and to recruit adult mentors for high school students who need role models. We hope the long term benefit of this gift to our alma mater will be a decrease in the number of poorly performing students, and, thereby, an increase in the overall performance of students at SHS. What a noble way to say, "Thanks, SHS!" For more information, click on the links below: |
